Alan turned down the road to Kai’s home and found himself trailing a very old, dirty, battered Ford, which might have been white once upon a time. The driver was talking on his cell phone, and Alan wished he’d pull into the side of the road to talk. It was too dangerous to pass him, even though he was driving very slowly, because it wasn’t far to the driveway and roller door entry to Kai’s home.

Just be patient. He’ll finish his call and head off wherever he’s going.

Instead, the driver pulled into Kai’s driveway, and the roller door began to open. This must be the family attorney Sawyer spoke about. He doesn’t drive a very attorney-ish car, that’s for sure. It looks more like something a teenager would buy as his first set of wheels.

Alan continued crawling along behind him and pulled into the driveway immediately after him. The roller descended, enclosing them in the Hill family compound, and Alan waited for the attorney to get out of his way so he could park behind Kai’s Jaguar as usual.

Instead, while Sawyer finished closing the roller door, Storm came running along the concrete path from the apartments to the garage area. “You can’t park that rust-bucket here. You’ll drop oil all over the path.”

“It doesn’t leak. Only the outside is battered. The engine works perfectly.”

“Of course it will leak. That thing is likely older than I am. Sawyer, open the door. He has to park it outside.”

“Stop acting like an idiot, Storm. If Cruz says it doesn’t leak, then it doesn’t leak. Where are your manners? Cruz is our guest.”

“No, that’s fine. He doesn’t have to believe me. Let me put some newspaper under the car just to make him feel better.”

Alan leaned out his window. “Perhaps you could let me through and I’ll park before you go to the trouble of doing that. Otherwise, you’ll just have to move your vehicle later.”

Sawyer pulled Storm out of the way and started talking to him quietly but forcefully. Cruz shrugged and moved his car forward so Alan could inch around and park behind Kai’s Jaguar as he usually did. Then Sawyer was back, telling Cruz to park behind his car. Storm stood and watched, a mutinous look on his face that intrigued Alan. Was he the one who’d have to scrub the concrete if it did get dirty? Or did he have some other problem that Alan didn’t know about?

He locked his car and walked past the living room to the dining room, which was already starting to fill with people. Eating with this family was so different from his normal meal times. He’d grown up with just the one sibling, his sister, Angela, and his dad had often worked late back then. Sometimes, especially when they were younger, they’d all eaten around a table, but mostly they’d each taken their meal and sat with it in front of the television or taken it back to their own room to eat while they played computer games or studied.
